What is Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)?

The history of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) started in the 1960′s when computer systems first had the capability to transfer data between other computer systems. The progressive history of EDI has centered primarily on the evolution of data format standards for exchanging electronic business documents. On occasions advances in data communications and data protocols have dominated the history of EDI.

EDI is a computer-to-computer interchange of business documents among companies, replacing Phone calls, faxing, emailing, and snail mailing paper documents.

EDI documents use meticulous computer record formats that are based on widely accepted standards such as X12 or EDIFACT. Each business will use the flexibility allowed by the standards in a unique way that supports their business requirements. These requirements will be provided to their business partners in a form called an EDI Specification Sheet or Specs for short.

Just in Time

JIT

Just in Time (JIT) is a manufacturing approach that is also relevant in retail, which attempts to improve a company’s return on investment (ROI) by decreasing in-process inventory and accompanying carrying costs. To meet JIT objectives, the method relies on signals or Kanban between different points that are involved in the process, which tell production when to make the next part, or in retail, this means having the products delivered on the specific day sales will take place. Kanban are usually ‘tickets’ but can be simple visual signals, such as the presence or absence of a part on a shelf. Implemented correctly, JIT centers on continuous improvement and can improve a manufacturing organization’s ROI, quality, and productivity. To achieve continuous improvement key areas of focus could be flow, employee involvement, and quality.

JIT is dependent on other essentials in the inventory chain also. One instance, its effective application cannot be independent of other key components of a lean manufacturing system or it can result with undesirable results. In recent years manufacturers continue to improve forecasting methods such as applying a trailing 13-week average as a better predictor for JIT planning; however, research demonstrates that basing JIT on the assumption of stability is inherently unreliable.

The philosophy of JIT is simple: the stowing of idle inventory is a waste of resources. JIT inventory systems expose the unseen cost of keeping inventory, which is not a simple solution for a company to adopt. The business must follow an array of new methods to manage the consequences of the change. The ideas in this way of working come from many different disciplines including statistics, industrial engineering, production management, and behavioral science. The JIT inventory philosophy outlines how inventory is seen and how it relates to management.

Inventory is perceived as incurring costs, or waste, instead of adding and storing value, contrary to traditional accounting. This does not mean to say JIT is implemented without awareness that removing inventory exposes pre-existing manufacturing issues. This way of working encourages businesses to eliminate inventory that does not compensate for manufacturing process issues, and to constantly improve those processes to require less inventory. Secondly, allowing any stock habituates management to stock keeping. Management may be tempted to keep stock to hide production problems. These problems include backups at work centers, machine reliability, process variability, lack of flexibility of employees, equipment, and insufficient capacity.

In short, the JIT inventory system focus is having the correct material, at the right time, in the designated location, and in the exact amount, without the safety net of inventory.

Software as a Service (SaaS) is an emerging model for providing software to large markets. Many recent global IT companies that emphasize internet and e-commerce offerings have adopted the SaaS Model as their primary means of pricing offers.
The concept is simple, which is consistent with the ACCLIMATE business strategy on Systems Interoperability.

Rather than offer separate contracts for One Time License Fees (OTLF), related annual maintenance, and then offer Support, with the need for additional fees for software upgrades, the customer is served through a service model analogous to any basic utility e.g. wireless phone service.

What is VPN? -VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and refers to a set of software and hardware that enable your computer to transparently connect to a remote network as if you were physically attached to that network. Communication between your computer and the remote VPN hardware is encrypted while using VPN.

Why Use VPN? -A VPN alone is just a way to bolster your security and access resources on a network in which you are not physically connected. What you opt to do with a VPN is a different story.

Software VPN –Software VPN will generally require more maintenance from the customer since they are responsible for ensuring the server is always available for connection. Acclimate will be required only to ensure the client is running and connecting. A contact for VPN issues will be required if the client is unable to connect.

The Software VPN option will be any form of VPN that allows Acclimate to install a client on our server to establish the required VPN connection. This can include providing Acclimate a client from an existing router, using built in Microsoft VPN, or a third party software to software VPN. Third party software will be provided by the customer to Acclimate, any cost associated with obtaining licensing for the systems interoperability software will be handled by the customer.

Hardware VPN –Hardware VPN will generally require less maintenance since typically they are setup once and stay online. The customer will still be expected to maintain and monitor their side of the connection and a contact for VPN support will still be required. Typically this connection would be used to allow access to multiple network locations inside the customer network.

A hardware VPN will involve a monthly cost from Acclimate and will be established with the customer’s router. Acclimate will monitor the hardware VPN connection for uptime, however the customer is responsible for ensuring the router is available on their side. Acclimate will attempt to connect any router with options given, however due of restrictions from the cloud provider this may not always be possible.
